Azo compounds (R–N=N–R′) decompose thermally into two carbon-centred radicals with the clean release of nitrogen gas. Compared with peroxides they give fewer side reactions and lower residual odour/colour — ideal where product purity matters and where the evolving N₂ is an asset (foaming).

Pick the azo whose T½,10h sits near your reaction temperature so initiation is smooth rather than a sudden burst. AIBN covers the ~60–70 °C window; water-soluble V-50 enables entirely aqueous systems.
In PVC, EVA and rubber, the nitrogen released on decomposition becomes the blowing gas. Low-temperature grades (V-40, AMBN) let you foam heat-sensitive resins without scorch. Rate is tuned by grade blend and oven/profile temperature.
Azo initiators avoid peroxide residues and metallic catalysts, giving cleaner polymers for adhesives, coatings and biomedical hydrogels where extractables are scrutinised.

They are generally less shock/impact sensitive and do not require the aggressive oxidiser handling of peroxides, but they are still self-reactive. Above their safe temperature they decompose exothermically, and AIBN-type grades can release trace nitrile by-products at very high temperature, so respect the recommended ceiling.
It is the temperature at which half the initiator decomposes in 10 hours. Formulators use it to estimate the rate at a given process temperature: roughly a 10 °C rise halves the half-life. It is the single most useful selection number.
